Billy Nunez, The Wizard of Oz in China

*INSTANTLY FALLS IN LOVE*

I AM SO DOWN WITH THIS.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS

yo, I really want information re: Billy Nunez’s race. Because if he is not Chinese I may have some issues with this…no matter how cute it is.

Why does that matter?
I wanted to just reblog this for the illustrations, but now, I have to ask, why does the artist’s race even matter? I mean, I understand that you don’t want people being racist, or insulting chinese culture, but is that what’s happening up there? I mean, if all the characters were buck-toothed, squinty-eyed, stereotyped charactatures, then yeah, that would be pretty racist, but wouldn’t that be just as racist if it was done by a Chinese person?

I mean, it’s probably not an accurate portrayal of Chinese culture, or Chinese art styles, but it’s not a mockery either. And again, if it’s not okay to portray these inaccurately, then is it any better for a Chinese man to do that?
The intention of this was probably to show what The Wizard of Oz might look like if it was set in China, or similar themed world. Just to do alternative art. Shouldn’t everyone be free to do that? I mean, maybe it’s just me, but I don’t feel like an artist should have to stick only to the art of their own culture. They should be able to express themselves.
By telling artists that they can only do certain styles puts a clear separation between cultures. Wouldn’t the best way to avoid racism be to avoid making a big deal out of different races? This clearly wasn’t meant to be an attack on any culture, regardless of the race of artist.

There’s a quote by Morgan Freeman where he says he dislikes black history month, because by making a big deal out of “don’t be racist” you’re basically separating the races and preventing it from going away. That’s how I see something like this.
To be fair, I’m not some activist, or social justice major, so maybe I’m wrong, but that’s just how it seems to me.

…I don’t even know how to respond to this holy mess of what the fuck.

Looks like we’ve got bingo on the WHITE PRIVILEGED INTERNET BINGO card.
