Don’t Consent to a Search!
If the cops say: "Do you mind if I look in your purse, bag, home, or car"?
You say: "I do not consent to a search"
If the cops say: "Why not? Are you hiding something?"
You say: "I believe in my Constitutional right to privacy and I do not consent to a search."
This is both good advise that could have some really big consequences. Especially for PoC and those that are visibly queer, and especially those who are both. The police are not your friends and sometimes not consenting to a search can get you really hurt. I am not advocating consent to searches, but I am advocating for those of us who are privileged to be mindful of that privilege when we offer this sort of advise.
Protip, tho: this depends on the state and what police procedure is. If, for example, you are in your car and some cops pull you over, they can give you a random breathalyzer test. Once you fail that, they can do whatever the fuck they want in terms of searching.
