Tough As Ovaries
Do you think if I have really good recommendations and an acceptable(notgreatbyanymeans) GPA I could get into a slightly decent college?

….It really depends on so many different factors.  Things like the quality of your high school, the difficulty of your courses, your SAT scores, your extracurriculars, etc.  Also, your writing sample.  Your interview, if it’s required for the university you want.

Every university looks for different things.  And “slightly decent” is a ridiculously flexible term.  Example: MIT is obviously ridiculously amazing at science things, but their English department? Not really the best.  William and Mary? Excellent all around liberal arts school. No Engineering.  I could go on and on.

Essentially, college is like matchmaking.  I was lucky because I was able to go to a prep school that had a 100% college acceptance rate.  Additionally, I got into my undergrad early decision…probably because I was also a local girl.  And because my school required a certain number of extracurriculars (we had no gym, but still had to have athletic credits to graduate).  Volunteering was also mandatory.  I also aced the verbal section of the SATs, the second time I took it.  I also had really excellent AP teachers. I could go on. I was lucky.

At the same time, I still WASN’T SURE I was going to get in.  You never know.

I would say, cross your fingers, make yourself look as stellar as possible on paper (but DON’T lie!), and just wait and see what happens. You may be pleasantly surprised.
