Tough As Ovaries
LimeCrime makeup just keeps fucking up.

femmepunx:

I mean, come on. REALLY?

Also, her response here; apparently, cultural appropriation is “a little silly” to her.

….Oh my GOD you guys….let me post some GEMS from the interview:

Not any more than a Hollywood movie is meant to portray reality. I am a makeup artist, not a historian :), representing an entire race in a historically-accurate manner is an ill-fitted task… Me and my team’s goal was to create is a fantasy inspired by China, which we did through creative means available to us such as styling, makeup, hair and photography.”

….The FUCK? Because using really offensive yellowface stereotypes HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HISTORY IF YOU DON’T ACTUALLY DO HISTORICAL RESEARCH.

….

And on why she didn’t’ use an Asian Model:

Before I answer this, let me make clear that I think Asian women are beautiful and I have worked with a few in the past as a makeup artist. However, since our Chinadoll was not meant to be necessarily Asian, she could be portrayed by a person of any descent. Chinadoll is a character, an amalgam of inspirations ranging from dolls to Shanghai Art Deco advertising posters. We chose HannaBeth (who is a total sweetheart, by the way) because she has lovely features and embodies the feisty spirit we wanted.

And yes, the name is a pun that refers to both, China and porcelain.

….So basically, she’s saying that the look she created was INSPIRED BY CHINA and REFERS TO CHINA (in an offensive way, btw, since “Chinadoll” is quite derogatory) BUT A WHITE WOMAN EMBODIES THE “FEISTY SPIRIT” BETTER.  WTF? Because Asian women can’t be feisty? And because you just HAD to do yellowface to get your point across?

….

AND on Cultural Appropriation:

hat is cultural appropriation anyway? You can read the Wikipedia article here, but to summarize it’s the borrowing of certain cultural elements by another cultural group. To be honest, I find the notion a little silly. It implies that unless you are Japanese, you can’t cosplay as your favorite anime character or write manga without offending someone. You can’t sing the blues or release a rap album if you weren’t born black.

.but I find this whole ‘cultural appropriation’ thing — or cultural exchange, as I like to call it— kinda brilliant actually. I think it encourages acceptance, enriches our existence, and makes us more tolerant toward other humans all over the world. Borrowing from cultures — and letting borrow! — is vital to ending racism, bigotry and misanthropy. To say nothing of the art and music it has given us throughout the years: Mozart’s March Alla Turca, Tchaikovsky’s Chinese Dance from The Nutcracker, and the entire Japonism movement in art , just to name a few!

….

Because clearly, wearing  stereotypical yellowface is basically just APPRECIATING CULTURE AND MAKING MINE BETTER BY INTERPRETING YOURS FALSE.  Additionally? the whole Chinese Dance from the Nutcracker? Yeah.  Really fucking offensive. Really full of stereotypes.  Pretty much always performed in Yellowface.  And want to know something interesting about March Alla Turca and the entirety of the Nutcracker? Both composers were PURPOSEFULLY BEING INACCURATE BECAUSE THEY FELT LIKE EUROPEAN SOCIETY COULDN’T HANDLE AUTHENTICITY.  Tchaikovsky was known for basically “westernizing” all of his russian dances and shit. You know who was ACTUALLY accurate? Stravinsky. Rite of Spring. You know what happened when they opened Rite of Spring in Paris? The theater rioted. That’s what happened.

…Basically, this woman is saying, “I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY THIS IS OFFENSIVE BECAUSE I’M JUST APPRECIATING CULTURE AND I’M NOT TRYING TO BE ACCURATE SO PEOPLE ARE BEING SILLY.”

You’re saying you’re not trying to be accurate in a portrayal of Asian culture in YELLOWFACE.  Would you create an AfricanDoll look USING A WHITE MODEL? No? Does that sound off to you? Then why is YELLOWFACE ANY DIFFERENT?

I’m sick and tired of white people telling me that dressing white women up to look like some kind of chinky stereotypical joke is NOT OFFENSIVE. That somehow, the whole “appropriation of asian culture” doesn’t count if it’s JUST FOR FUNZIES. That “oh, I wasn’t trying to be accurate, so it’s ok.”

By that logic, ALL stereotypes are fine. Because if you’re not ACTUALLY trying to be accurate, then it doesn’t matter right? It’s just fantasy! Your culture is just fodder for our imagination!
